Water Color Style in Substance Painter

This is a tutorial for my painting process for Fern (Frieren). These were my decisions and the logic needed to translate a 2D manga style into a 3D character. Includes Substance Painter File. The tools that we use are super easy to understand, but this is not a tutorial from 0 to Substance Painter. I recommend watching some videos on how it works if you're unfamiliar with it.

  • Intro & Workflow Logic: I start by explaining my full workflow and the logic behind NPR painting. You'll understand how I read the character's style before touching a single brush in a 2-hour + video.

  • Full Character: A complete breakdown of the painting process for the entire character, where you can see all the decisions in action. (Note: This tutorial is focused on texturing. The NPR Shader for Maya/Arnold is a separate product and is not included here.)

  • Hair Deep Dive: A dedicated section focusing on the hair, showing how to achieve that specific watercolor look.

  • Project File (.spp): You get my actual Substance Painter file. Open it to check my layers, masks, and see exactly how I organized the project to achieve the final result. Compatibility: Substance 3D Painter v11.0.0 or newer is required to open the project file.
